Start every trial on the vendor’s own website

Search ads and look-alike domains are the most common way buyers end up on the wrong site. Type the vendor’s address yourself, or use the official-site links in the table below, which point only at each vendor’s own product page. Then check the address bar: the part immediately before .com,.org or the country ending should be the vendor’s name, spelled correctly, with a valid HTTPS padlock. Extra words such as “get-”, “-free” or “-setup” in the domain are a warning sign.

Legitimate trial forms for business software usually ask for:

• your name and a work email address (many vendors reject personal mailboxes);
• company name, country and sometimes a phone number, because a sales engineer may follow up;
• a rough size of your environment — devices, sites or endpoints — so the trial is set up to match;
• for cloud products, the region where your data should be stored.

A standard trial should not need payment card details, remote access to your machine, or your network passwords typed into a web form. Monitoring credentials such as SNMP communities or read-only service accounts belong inside the product, entered once the trial is running — and ideally created fresh, with read-only rights, just for the evaluation.

Cloud-managed products typically need only a small collector or agent; self-hosted products need the vendor’s server software. Either way, the vendor provides it from its own domain after sign-up. Before running it:

• Confirm the file came from the vendor’s domain, not a third-party link in an email.
• On Windows, open the file’s properties and check the digital signature names the vendor.
• Where the vendor publishes a SHA-256 checksum, compare it — for example withGet-FileHash .\file -Algorithm SHA256 in PowerShell or sha256sum file on Linux.
• Keep your antivirus and endpoint protection switched on. No genuine vendor asks you to turn them off.
• Run evaluations on a test virtual machine or a non-critical server first, not on a domain controller.

The same applies to free, open-source tools. Wireshark and Angry IP Scanner are published by their own projects at wireshark.org and angryip.org; get them there, and where the project lists checksums or signed release notes, compare them before you run anything. LizardSystems Network Scanner, which is free only for personal use, comes from lizardsystems.com, where the vendor publishes a SHA-256 hash for the current release. A “bundled” copy on a third-party site adds risk and nothing else.
